No need for Opposition to raise a ruckus, says Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR: There is no need for Opposition MPs to raise the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) issue in Parliament because the Government is seriously pursuing investigations into the matter, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said the Transport Ministry had formed a special task force and two committees to handle the issue following the release of the PKFZ audit report.

Khairy, who is Rembau MP, said the committees should be allowed space to conduct their investigations and present their findings.

“Why must the Opposition raise it in Parliament because procedures are actually being followed. No one is sweeping anything under the carpet.

“I’m sure opposition leaders like (Ipoh Timor MP) Lim Kit Siang will want to go on a publicity stunt by raising it in the House, and he will conveniently ignore the fact that the Government is already looking into the issue,” he told The Star after an Umno Youth meet-the-people session at the Kerinchi flats here yesterday.

Khairy was asked on the possibility that the Dewan Rakyat, which reconvenes today, will be raucous with accusations by Opposition MPs of government impropriety over the PKFZ issue.

Lim Kit Siang Motion to debate PKFZ rejected

KUALA LUMPUR (June 15, 2009) : Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Ipoh Timur)'s urgent motion to debate the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal and for a royal commission of inquiry to be set up was rejected by Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.

Pandikar said the matter was not urgent as a special task force had already been set up to help in PKFZ's financial restructure and it was given two months to come up with its recommendations.

"At the same time, the project is also being investigated by the Public Accounts Committee and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission," he said.

Lim's motion requested that a royal commission be set up to question former transport ministers Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, the Port Klang Authority chairmen and board members as well as government officials.

Later, Lim told reporters in parliament lobby that Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat must produce the ministerial statement as promised earlier to all MPs next Monday.

"Is Ong prepared to cut short his Paris trip, rush home to make a ministerial statement in Parliament tomorrow or Thursday to account for the RM12.5 billion scandal?" he asked.
