Kok demands compensation from Utusan

PETALING JAYA: Seputeh MP Teresa Kok is demanding RM100mil in compensation from Utusan Malaysia columnist Datuk Chamil Wariya and the newspaper for defamation.
She is also demanding RM10mil for defamation from Cheras Umno division chairman Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee.

Kok’s counsel Sankara Nair said letters of demand had been sent out to both Chamil and Syed Ali on Sept 17, and they have until Sept 24 to respond.

In the first case, Sankara said Chamil had been listed as the first defendant while Utusan was the second.

“We are asking for compensation as Chamil’s article instigated assasination, when it said that the MP should be shot.

“The implication is serious, and the amount (RM100mil) set is considerably high because it involves her life,” told The Star.

On Oct 12, Utusan published Chamil’s story titled “Politik Baru YB J”, which Sankara claimed referred either directly or by innuendo to his client.

In the letter of demand, it was stated that:

“The impugned article that you published, mean and were understood to mean that our client, inter alia:-

1) is a racist;

2) is a religious bigot;

3) is an untrustworthy person;

4) is intolerant, unprincipled and a politician bereft of integrity;

5) is a parochial politician who is anti-Islam and anti-Malay; and

6) has committed criminal offences under the Penal Code and other laws of Malaysia.”

Besides the RM100mil, Kok is also demanding for an immediate public retraction by Utusan and published apologies in newspapers of her choice, plus an undertaking that Chamil and Utusan will not repeat the above words, allegations and comments contained in the impugned article.

On the second case, Sankara said Syed Ali was defamatory when he said that suing Utusan is like suing the Malays.

“She never wanted to sue Malays, just Utusan,” he said.

Kok is also seeking a public retraction, published media apologies and undertaking from Syed Ali that the same allegations and comments are not repeated.

On Oct 9, Kok filed a RM30mil suit against Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd and the paper’s columnist Zaini Hassan over an article that allegedly defamed her.
