Summer 2008 Internship Opportunities at the OIC Mission to the United Nation in New York

The Permanent Observer Mission of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to the United Nations (UN) in New York is currently seeking qualified candidates for the 2008 Summer OIC Internship Program.

Background:

The OIC is the second largest inter-governmental organization globally after the UN, with 57 Member States and 5 Observer States. The OIC promotes solidarity and cooperation among its Member States in the political, economic, social, scientific, cultural and commercial spheres. In New York, the OIC’s Observer Mission to the United Nations coordinates the positions of OIC Member States on issues of common concern in the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the UN Security Council (UNSC), the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and other UN bodies. The Mission also promotes dialogue with media and civil society entities in North America on topics of preeminent importance ranging from combating Islamophobia and Terrorism to humanitarian relief initiatives in post-disaster and post-conflict regions to promoting human rights, good governance and the advancement of the rights of women and children.

Nature of the Internship:

The internship is both intense and instructive, exposing the candidate, under appropriate supervision and guidance, to the activities of a major inter-governmental organization, and its participation in the work of the UN. Responsibilities include desk studies, orientation with the OIC's polices and programs, familiarization with issues of concern to the OIC in the socio-political-economic-humanitarian spheres, attendance at meetings and drafting issue papers and reports.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Given the limited number of internship opportunities available at the OIC Mission, preference will be given to candidates who are either originally from or currently citizens of OIC Member States. For a complete listing of OIC Member States, please refer to the following link: http://www.oicun.org/categories/Mission/Members/

2. Candidates should, as a minimum, have completed their first year of a four year undergraduate degree program. Recent graduates and those currently enrolled in a graduate degree program are welcome to apply. The internship may particularly be useful for candidates who have recently completed their undergraduate degree and are currently contemplating graduate school or a career in international relations. Candidates specializing in International Relations, Area Studies, Political Science, Development Economics, Islamic Studies and Anthropology are particularly encouraged to apply.

3. The candidate should be fluent in oral and written English. Knowledge of Arabic and French, while useful, is not a requirement.

Conditions:

The internship is unpaid. Upon successful completion of internship requirements and obligations, the intern will receive a certificate of completion.

Required Materials:

Applications are accepted on a need-based, rolling basis. Interested applicants should email their resume, cover letter (indicating motivations for applying and the exact time period available to intern) and three references to:
