SELANGOR FINISHED SECOND BEHIND TERENGGANU IN SUKMA GAMES

Congratulations to the winners of SUKMA games. "The most important thing in sports is not to win but to participate" but if you can win so much the better, why not. Being runnersup in this year's game, Selangor was short of seven gold targets, nevertheless, performed better than the previous game in Kedah in terms of gold medal tally. Well done Selangor.

With the two gold won yesterday, Terengganu's overall medal tally stood at 61 gold, 39 silver, 47 bronze while Selangor finished second with 54 gold, 47 silver and 52 bronze, ahead of Sarawak with 52 gold, 52 silver and 42 bronze.

Pahang finished fourth with 31 gold, Wilayah Persekutuan in fifth (29 gold), 2006 Sukma hosts Kedah in sixth place (29 gold), Perak in seventh place (29 gold), Penang in eighth position (27 gold), Johor in ninth place (27 gold), next Sukma hosts Melaka in 10th place with 23.

Sabah finished 11th on 21 gold, while Negri Sembilan were in 12th position (11 gold), Kelantan were 13th (8 gold), Perlis were in 14th place (4 gold) and Brunei with two silver medals finished last.

Terengganu, who won only 15 gold medals at the 2006 Sukma hosted by Kedah to finish in 11th place, had initially targeted 35-40 gold medals here and the all conquering feat even surprised Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said.

"We had initially targeted 35-40 gold medals for the Games but crossing the 50 and 60 mark is a memorable feat and a major boost for sports in Terengganu," said Ahmad when giving away prizes for sepak takraw winners here yesterday.

Selangor, who finished in second place with a 54-gold haul, had also performed better than the 53 gold medals they won to emerge overall champions in Kedah, but could not make up the seven-gold deficit.

Third-placed Sarawak with 52 gold medals, had also performed much better than the 36-gold feat in Kedah, but the overall performances of Pahang with 31 here against 39 in Kedah and Penang with 29 against 36 two years ago, saw a drop.

Melaka, the next Sukma hosts in 2010, showed a 100 per cent improvement in their overall performance with 23 gold medals, compared to only 11, two years ago.

The 12th Sukma also saw seven new Malaysian records four in swimming, two in weightlifting and one in athletics while 24 new Games records were set in swimming, 15 in athletics, 13 in weightlifting and two in archery.

Meanwhile, Johor took the gold in weightlifting through Mohd Saufik Ahmad yesterday in the men's below 105kg while Selangor made the sepak takraw gold theirs, as both the regus that competed in the final were from Selangor.
