Google's CIO (chief information officer), 37-year old, 6'4"tall, 183Ibs, Mr Douglas Merill chairs 60 meetings per week, travels about 3 months in a year and manages 1000 staff. Google, 10-year old corporation has market capitalisation of USD200 billion. He is composed, stress-free and not all overwhelmed by his responsibilities. I envy him. In an interview by Joe Kita, Mr Merill likens information explosion to waves come crashing to someone during ocean surfing that have to be negotiated. Dr Herbert Benson M.D. of MASSACHUSETTS HOSPITAL in Boston of the opinion that 60% - 90% of visits to doctors stem from stress, and the root cause of anxiety (kerisauan, rasa cemas), depression (kemurungan), anger (kemarahan), insomnia (sukar tidur), hypertension (penyakit darah tinggi), heart attack (serangan jantung) dan infertility (kemandulan). According to him, better organisation is not just a desirable skill but the key to better health.
Mr Merill's idea of organisation is to clear one's head. "The less stuff that's rattling around my brain, the more I can focus on whatever I'm doing", affirms Mr Merill. So rule number one is to empty your head. Second is to swap filing cabinets for scaffolds. Thirdly, to redefine organisation as "search" that is to use on line tools to build personal database, and then search it later as important questions arise. Finally, to leverage other people and their ideas. I woud say " do what you do best, pay others to do the rest". Read on.
