FMM Bantah Pelaksanaan GST

FMM Against Implementation Of GST

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) is concerned with calls to implement the goods and services tax (GST) which it considers inappropriate for Malaysia and should be deferred indefinitely.

In a statement, FMM said Hong Kong had evaluated and abandoned its decision to implement GST eventhough it had a total trade to gross domestic product GDP) ratio of 404 per cent and 98 per cent of its businesses were small and medium enterprises.

"The Australian businesses too have called on their government to reduce GST from 10 per cent to five per cent to stimulate economic growth," it said.

FMM said, Malaysia, with total trade to GDP ratio of 220 per cent should take cognisance of these countries' concerns over the GST and the implications, particularly on consumption and business operating costs.

It said the greatest concern of businesses, in particular exporters, was the efficiency of refunds.

FMM said from the consumer perspective, the GST, a consumption tax, was regressive.

"The rakyat, who do not have to pay income taxes prior to GST, now have to do so on their everyday consumption of goods and services and they would not benefit from the income tax reduction that is expected to accompany GST implementation," it said.
